Remarkable women of India: Mother Teresa: Mother to the poorest of the poor.

Remarkable women of India: Mother Teresa: Mother to the poorest of the poor.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine master

Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console,
To be understood, as to understand,
To be loved, as to love,
For it is in giving that we receive,
And it’s in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it’s in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

Amen

Mother Teresa’s favorite poem. (Prayer of Saint Francis).

The favorite poem of mother Teresa itself showed how mother loved humanity and human. It could really be arduous task to find a person in the entire world who did not hear the name of this great humanitarian, saint and mother of the poorest of the poor.

The mother of all the poor, crippled, diseased and abandoned, was not born in India yet she has been a mother of all Indians by her work in India. Mother Teresa was born in Albania on 26th august, 1910. The name given to her was Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu. However, when she had decided to devote her entire life to the service of poor she took name of Teresa inspired by sister Teresa who was  nun and saint of Spain.

Why mother Teresa had chosen white sari with blue edges?

Mother Teresa’s entire life is filled up with myriad numbers of inspiring incidents. There is a story behind why she has chosen the blue sari. Normally, all catholic nuns have to wear the common dress code selected by Catholicism. She had also been guided in the same way in 1948 when she was allowed to start a new institute.

However, after completing prayer she has chosen the white sari with blue edges. This sari is the dress code of the most exploited people of India. The untouchables. To choose a sari as a dress code which these people wear is the humblest and outstanding way to give them significance together with sending a message to the society that all people are equal.

First school

Mother was devoted to the poorest of poor.In 1948 she came to Calcutta to start her social activities. She wanted to start her school in an area where people could get the benefit of the school who otherwise had faintest chance. She chose ‘Moti Zeel’ area of Calcutta. The area was so poor that even she did not get the place to run a school. Undeterred, she started her school in an open area under the tree with five students. The school had no chairs, no table,no black board or paper or pen. What It had was mother’s kind heart, dedication and service.

On October 7, 1950, Mother Teresa  founded  “The Missionaries of Charity”, whose primary task was to love and care for those persons nobody was prepared to look after.

Once during a conversation for starting a hospital. She was asked whether she had enough facilities and instrument to serve the ill people. “The requirement  is love and service which we have in abundance.” mother replied.

We cannot even stand at the site where mother works.

The person requires the purity of heart and unfathomable kindness to poor if he wants to work like mother was doing. Mother had started one hospital,Nirmal hriday, the purest heart. People who lived on the roads and were ill was taken to this hospital and treated well.

There was an incident when a pujari of a local temple accused mother that she has been promoting Christianity under the name of service to the poor. They went to police commissioner and  told him about this. Commissioner did not believe it but by the insistence of the pujari and some other people he got ready to go at the site and see what was happening.

When they entered inside they were stunned by the scene. People were being given all the service they should be given. All the sisters were busy in cleaning the wounds.Mother was also treating the patients. The room was badly smelled with awful mixture of wounds, blood and medicines. The pujari felt nauseated. He covered is mouth with handkerchief. Mother was not aware about this because she was busy in treating patients. They all were chanting prayers.

Commissioner was taken aback. He was impressed with mother’s work and at the same time infuriated with panditji. He had told panditji that when he could come to this room without covering his face, he will be given the place. Panditji was ashamed of his deed.

Such was the dedication of Mother Teresa.

She always sat in the front seat of her van. Someone asked her “why do you always seat in the front seat of a van? She replied that I could see the both sides of roads where the poor and helpless people lie.

No award is big for Mother Teresa.

In the year 1979 mother Teresa was awarded Nobel peace prize for her humanitarian work. She is the third Indian after C.V. Raman (science) and Gurudev Ravindranath Tagore (literature) to have been received this greatest awards in the world. But for mother the service to the poor is the greatest award. She has proven this on the occasion of award function too.  Normally a lavish feast is served on the occasion of the award. Mother urged  and convinced them not to arrange the feast and instead give the money for the poor people’s food. Everyone was stunned and got emotional by this decision. They did it. In addition, mother got other people and country’s support and finance.

Saint Mother Teresa

In Christianity, sanctioning any person to be the saint is the most difficult and complicated process. How a person is selected, beatified and canonized as a saint deserves a separate article.

However, we can understand the importance by knowing that George Presarti of Italy has been canonized as a Saint after 65 years of his death. He died during the service of poor at the age of 24. Whereas, Katherine had to wait for 30 years.

Mother Teresa was beatified in 2003 and sanctioned by Pope Francis as a Saint Teresa of Calcutta in September 2016.

Abundance of awards.

There are so many people in the world who are honored by the awards. However, there are  some  saint like people who honors the award by taking it.Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln are such people. We can add the name of Mother Teresa in this list. Mother of the poor say good bye to this world

We can not count how many eyes may have wept on that day, how many hearts felt pain that day. How many poor lost hope that day.

The day Mother Teresa took her last breath and bid farewell to the world forever on 5th September 1997. The lost was immense to the world specifically to those poor and abandoned people.
